Assessment timers & due dates

How timing works for students, and what changing a due date does.

Updated 13 July 2026

Timers

If an assessment has a time limit, the countdown is server-anchored: it starts when the student begins and is tracked on the server, so refreshing the page, switching devices, or losing connection doesn't reset or extend it. When time is up, the attempt auto-submits.

Due dates

  • Students can start any time before the due date; reminders go out as it approaches.
  • Extending a due date re-arms reminders — students who were already reminded get notified again near the new date.
  • After the due date, late submissions are controlled by the assessment's settings.
